Rules & Regulations

A complete listing of Woodlawn Funeral Home & Memorial Gardens Rules & Regulations can be accessed in PDF format by clicking HERE.

  • Woodlawn reserves the right to cancel ground burial due to weather conditions for the safety of the public and its employees.
  • Only pets on a leash and under the control of the owner shall be permitted in the Cemetery.  (Owners are required to pick up after their pets.)
  • No skateboards, roller skates, roller-blades, playing of any kind of ball, hitting of golf balls or any kind of sporting activities will be allowed in the Cemetery. Casual bicycle riding, walking or jogging is allowed provided that all rules of the road are followed.  Participant, by engaging in such activities, assumes all risks associated with such activities whether or not such risks were reasonably foreseeable.
  • No alcoholic beverages are allowed within the Cemetery.
  • Woodlawn is not responsible for theft, vandalism, or other malicious damage to any private or personal property within the Cemetery, to include memorials, bronzes, vases, flowers or decorations.
  • The Cemetery closes at dusk.  Any person found within the Cemetery boundaries after dark is considered a trespasser.
  • No person is permitted to use profane or boisterous language or in any way disturb the quiet and good order of the Cemetery.
  • All persons are forbidden to hunt or fish or in any way disturb the animals about the Cemetery.  Gathering flowers or breaking trees, shrubbery or plants is forbidden.
  • Planting of trees, flowers, shrubbery, etc. is not allowed on Cemetery grounds.
  • Automobiles shall not be driven through the grounds at a speed greater than 15 miles per hour and must be kept on the right side of the road and off the grass.  No parking is allowed on any grass area.  Automobiles are not allowed to park or come to a full stop in front of an open interment right unless in attendance at the funeral.  No automobile is allowed to be left in the Cemetery overnight.  Automobiles left overnight will be towed the following morning at owner’s expense.
  • No wooden or cast iron benches or chairs or any wooden or wire trellis are permitted upon the grounds.
  • Scattering of cremated remains (of pets or humans) is not permitted anywhere on Cemetery grounds. (The state of Virginia requires the attainment of a land owner's permission prior to scattering.)
  • No person, other than an employee of the Cemetery and on duty police officers, are permitted to possess or carry firearms within the Cemetery.  The exception to this rule is a Military Guard of Honor and this exception applies only when in the charge of an Officer and during a Military service.
  • No glass is permitted in the cemetery (i.e. containers, vases, knickknacks).   Balloons are not permitted in the cemetery (whether or not they are part of a flower arrangement or tied to a vase).

Flower Policy

The beauty and serenity of Woodlawn Memorial Gardens can only be sustained through proper maintenance.  Adherence to the floral regulations better enables the attainment of that goal.

  • The Cemetery permits only the use of bronze vases approved by the Cemetery as receptacles for flowers.  Vases shall be inverted in their own receptacle when not in use, the base of which shall be a granite foundation.
  • Only flowers in the above mentioned receptacles are allowed on any interment right.  No fresh flowers or live plants are to be placed inside the mausoleum.
  • Glass, ceramic and/or resin containers or objects are not permitted in order to safely maintain grounds.
  • Balloons are not permitted.
  • Special flowers are permitted subject to the parameters set out below and should be removed within 7 days of placement. Flowers left longer than 7 days will be removed and disposed of.
    • The placing of potted flowers, plants, summer wreaths or baskets on an exterior interment right is permitted for New Year’s Day, Valentine’s Day, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Halloween, Veterans’ Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Special flowers for these holidays may be placed as early as 5 days prior to the holiday date and as late as 5 days after the date.
    • Holiday wreaths, blankets and flowers are permitted on interment rights during the Holiday season. (December 1 - January 12)
    • Special flowers are also permitted to commemorate a birthday or anniversary if notice of their placement is given to the Cemetery office.
    • Funeral flowers will be left for a maximum of 2 to 5 days, depending on the season.
    • The Cemetery assumes no responsibility or liability for memorials, flowers lost by wind, theft or any other act. Floral foam and floral clay may anchor flowers into a vase in ordinary weather conditions; but there is a high risk that wind and/or rain may dislodge them. Woodlawn works with a vendor who designs artificial arrangements which are extremely durable. She uses a proprietary base which, in our experience, holds up extremely well even under severe weather conditions. For more information contact Woodlawn Funeral Home at 757-455-2838.
    • For families who have pre-purchased the memorial directly from Woodlawn, a temporary bronze vase will be installed, providing the memorial has been paid in full. Once the permanent memorial has been installed, the temporary vase will be removed.
